Transportation Songs

This week we sang about transportation. Here is one of the songs we sang this week and a great new train song for your Children's Music Playlist.

Going on Vacation
(Tune: She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain)

We’ll be going on vacation in a plane. Vroom. Vroom.
We’ll be going on vacation in a plane. Vroom. Vroom.
We’ll be going on vacation. We’ll be going on vacation.
We’ll be going on vacation in a plane. Vroom. Vroom.

What other vehicles can take you on vacation and what noises do they make?

I usually sing about a car (honk, honk), a train (choo, choo), and a boat (splash, splash). Then we get silly. What about a bicycle, hot air balloon or a space ship? Ask your child. I am sure they have plenty of ideas. (This week I was asked to sing about a monster truck.)

Also, here is one of my favorite transportation songs: “El Train” Laura Doherty.

Laura Doherty is a local Chicago musician. This is a great song about our beloved El Train.

Next week we sing about Valentine's Day and the people we love!

Happy Singing.

Family Dance Workshop

Do you have a little dancers at home? A constant wiggler? Does your little one do the toddler-booty-bouce when you turn on music?

The Columbia Dance Center has a family dance program. It is free for children under 12 and there is a free movement workshop before the show for the whole family. Each workshop is run by a professional dance company that is running a show at the Dance Center.

The next Family Dance is on February 8th. The movement workshop is at 2:15 and the family matinee is at 3:00.

This will be a great opportunity to expose your family to some amazing contemporary dance, get your child moving and experience live music.

Learn more and buy tickets (for adults only) here.

This month's dance companies are Khecari and The Humans. Don't miss it!

Then get a babysitter and see their evening show!

Shape song

Here is one of my favorite songs about shapes. It also gives you the opportunity to count out loud. (It's a sneaky math/geometry song!)

Shapes
(Tune: “Row, row”)

Square, square is a shape.
Tell me what you see?
Four corners. Four sides.
A square is what we see!

I cut shapes out of felt so we can count the sides and corners we are singing about. It also gives me the opportunity to ask the group if they can identify the shapes before I tell them what they are. I was surprised by a young two-year old who could identify all her shapes this week!

You could also sing with a shape-sorter toy or shape puzzle. Really any distinguishable shape would work.

Happy Singing!

Dinosaur Songs!

This week are singing about dinosaurs. Here is a song to get your body moving like a dinosaur. It also introduces two big words: herbivore and carnivore.

 Big Old Dinosaur

(Tune: Row Your Boat)

Roar, roar make a sound. Stop your feet on the ground.
Herbivore or Carnivore? I’m a big old dinosaur.

Here are two of my favorite dinosaur songs to dance to:

“Predator Dinosaur” Uncle Rock
