Sod Room: Week Three & Four

Last week, we sang about Zoo Animals and this week we are singing about Transportation.

Here are a few songs to try at home!

The Animals in the Zoo
(Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)

The snakes in the zoo go hiss, hiss, hiss
Hiss, hiss, hiss. Hiss, hiss, hiss.
The snakes in the zoo go hiss, hiss, hiss
All day long!

What other animals can you and your child think of? What sound do they make?

"Going to the Zoo" is a fun Raffi song to listen to on the way to the Lincoln Park Zoo or at home when your playing with animals. (Click the image below to find the song on Amazon.com.)

Living in Chicago, we regularly see helicopters. Many young kids here can tell the difference the sound of a helicopter and an airplane. Here is a simple song to sing about helicopters. I like to sing this song while spinning scarves above our heads like the blades of a helicopter.

Helicopter
(Tune: Frère Jacques)

Helicopter. Helicopter.
Way up high. Way up high.
See the blades are spinning. See the blades are spinning.
In the sky. In the sky.

Happy Singing!

Traffic Light

This week we are singing about transportation. Here is my Traffic Light song. I use my felt board and three felt circles. We get to talk about the color red, green and yellow.

Traffic Light
(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle)

Look up at the traffic light.
On the corner shining bright.
Red means stop.
Green means go.
Yellow means very, very slow.
Look up at the traffic light.
On the corner shining bright.

Here is another songs about transportation from a previous blog. Going on Vacation gives you the opportunity to sing about all kinds of modes of transportation. (I also use it as an excuse to imagine myself on a warm, sandy beach.)

One Last Note: One of my favorite songs we sing in music class is Drivin' in My Car by Ralph's World. (I know many of the parents and children will agree with me on this.)
Ralph from Ralph's World is playing at a fundraiser in Chicago on Sunday, May 4th.
It is raising money for a great cause and sounds like a great time!

Happy Singing!

Transportation Songs

This week we sang about transportation. Here is one of the songs we sang this week and a great new train song for your Children's Music Playlist.

Going on Vacation
(Tune: She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain)

We’ll be going on vacation in a plane. Vroom. Vroom.
We’ll be going on vacation in a plane. Vroom. Vroom.
We’ll be going on vacation. We’ll be going on vacation.
We’ll be going on vacation in a plane. Vroom. Vroom.

What other vehicles can take you on vacation and what noises do they make?

I usually sing about a car (honk, honk), a train (choo, choo), and a boat (splash, splash). Then we get silly. What about a bicycle, hot air balloon or a space ship? Ask your child. I am sure they have plenty of ideas. (This week I was asked to sing about a monster truck.)

Also, here is one of my favorite transportation songs: “El Train” Laura Doherty.

Laura Doherty is a local Chicago musician. This is a great song about our beloved El Train.

Next week we sing about Valentine's Day and the people we love!

Happy Singing.
